Inpatient Rehabilitation Units

The William Randolph Hearst Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at the Rubin and Marie Shulsky Rehabilitation Medicine Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center operate under the medical direction of Dr. James S. Lieberman, Physiatrist-in-Chief and Director of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The units provide intensive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to individuals with a wide range of diagnoses including stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, brain and spinal cord tumors, multiple sclerosis, hip fracture, amputations, burns, cancer diagnoses, cardiac and pulmonary disorders and general medical and surgical debility. Patients have a unique opportunity to have their acute care physician remain a part of their medical team, and also have access to on-site physicians in a wide variety of specialties.

Nursing care is provided on a 24-hour basis to address the medical, physical and comfort needs of the patients, while keeping in mind the goal of helping the individual achieve functional independence. Social Work services and Therapeutic Recreation provide support for the social, leisure, and spiritual needs of the patients and their families.

The rehabilitation team is comprised of caring, dedicated professionals striving to help the patient achieve their personal goals so that they may successfully reach the ultimate goal of community re-integration. Contact the Admissions Personnel for procedures and information. Outpatient services are also available at both NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell after discharge.

Providing the highest standard of care and addressing all of the needs of our patients are two of our highest priorities. One way we continually assess our abilities and strive to improve our services is by asking our patients to rate their stay in a number of categories. We have continued to achieve high scores in the overall satisfaction of our patients as well as satisfaction with the care given by each of the various health care professionals.
